How to make a narrated video walkthrough of a website. Free, in about five minutes.

Short answer: install Walkcast, paste the site's link (and a sign-in if pages are behind a login), confirm you may test the site, and press Record. A real browser walks up to 30 pages and returns an MP4 with a spoken voice-over, WebVTT captions and a transcript. You do not record your screen, speak, or edit anything.

What you need

  • A Windows 10 or 11 PC (64-bit). macOS and Linux can run Walkcast from source.
  • The address of the site, and permission to test it (your own site, or a client's that asked you to).
  • For pages behind a login: a username and password for a test account. Two-step email-then-password forms work.

Steps

  1. 1. Install Walkcast

    Download the Windows installer and run it. WebView2 is fetched automatically if the PC does not have it yet.

  2. 2. Paste the link and sign-in

    Paste the site's address and the username and password you use. Confirm you own the site or may test it.

  3. 3. Press Record

    A browser signs in, walks up to 30 pages and returns a narrated MP4 with captions and a transcript.

  4. 4. Review, edit, share

    Play the result in the app. Rewrite any line of the script and re-narrate, or swap in your own voice. Then share recording.mp4, or embed it with its captions.

What you get

FileWhat it is
recording.mp4H.264 video, AAC narration, embedded caption track. Plays everywhere.
narrated.webmThe same narration over the original WebM video.
captions.vttWebVTT captions, timed to the voice.
narration.wavThe voice-over on its own.
Page listEvery page visited, with its title and HTTP status.

Embed it with captions

<video controls playsinline preload="metadata">
  <source src="recording.mp4" type="video/mp4">
  <track kind="captions" src="captions.vtt" srclang="en" label="English" default>
</video>

Tips for a better walkthrough

  • Start from the page a new visitor would land on; Walkcast follows links on the same site from there.
  • Use a test account with realistic data. The narration reads page titles and what the browser did, so clear page titles make clearer narration.
  • Keep it short: 4 to 8 pages makes a walkthrough people finish. The maximum is 30.
  • If the site asks for a CAPTCHA or a two-factor code, Walkcast stops and tells you. Use an account without 2FA for recording.

Why the narration is accurate

Every line is written from the browser's own trace: the page it opened, the field it typed into, what the site answered. Nothing is guessed about intent, so the voice never describes something that is not on screen. Passwords are typed but never spoken or saved; files show a placeholder.
